What Is Muscle Release Therapy, and How Is It Different from Traditional Massage?

When you think of massage, what comes to mind?

Relaxation? Less tension? Feeling better after a long, stressful week?

Massage can provide those benefits.

And when you’re dealing with pain that repeatedly returns, stiffness that restricts movement, or discomfort following an old injury, you may be looking for something different.

What if the treatment focused on how your muscles work together, rather than simply where they hurt?

What Is Muscle Release Therapy?

Muscle Release Therapy is a specialized approach to therapeutic bodywork developed by Dennis Gibbons.

It focuses on the relationships among muscles, soft tissues, and movement patterns.

When something gets hurt, your body finds ways to keep you moving.

Other muscles may take on additional work to compensate for the injury. Sometimes those adjustments resolve completely. Sometimes they don’t.

Muscle Release Therapy focuses on identifying and addressing muscle and soft tissue restrictions that may be contributing to pain or limited movement.

The goal is to improve how muscles function together so movement becomes easier and more comfortable.

How Is It Different from Traditional Massage?

Traditional Swedish massage commonly uses flowing strokes, kneading, and other forms of manual pressure to relax muscles and reduce tension.

Deep tissue massage generally involves firmer or more targeted pressure.

Muscle Release Therapy takes a different approach.

Rather than concentrating primarily on relaxing a particular muscle, treatment focuses on how muscles work together to produce movement.

For example, when your shoulder doesn’t move properly, your neck and upper back muscles may compensate to help move your arm.

Those muscles can become tight and uncomfortable from doing extra work.

Massaging the neck may temporarily reduce the tension.

And when the shoulder continues to function the same way, the neck may continue doing the extra work.

Muscle Release Therapy looks at those relationships and works to improve muscle function rather than concentrating only on the area of discomfort.

Does It Have to Hurt to Work?

Many people believe that effective bodywork requires substantial pressure.

That isn’t necessarily true.

Some muscle and soft tissue problems respond well to gentle, specifically directed treatment.

Muscle Release Therapy uses specific contact and positioning to address restrictions.
